St John Fisher Catholic School in Chatham displayed the GCSE results of all year 11 pupils on a colour coded board, with emoji faces representing their grades. The decision to display the results in such a way was not a popular one: less than a week after the array of faces had been put up vociferous opposition from a number of parents led to their removal, and a more traditional - numerical - method being employed. Once would assume that the highest grade would be represented by a yellow face positively beaning with happiness; while the lowest grade would be indicated by as much sadness and grief a little graphical countenance can show. The headteacher explained that the emojis actually correlated with each pupil`s personal targets - so the pictograms are an indication of a positive or negative outcome; `Although the display board was not intended to cause any upset, we have taken the decision to remove it as three pupils in total have asked for their details to be taken down and a small number of parents have been in touch with us. ; The focus must be on improving students` life chances and we will continue to support each pupil and help them work towards their targets.` Emojis have become all the rage recently - only a few years ago it was impossible to send much more than a crudely constructed face, with deft arrangement of a bracket, a colon and perhaps a hyphen if you were really feeling artistic. Now mobile phone users can chose from hundreds of different faces, all clearly showing a variety of emotional states. The old maxim that a picture says a thousand words certainly feels true when you add an emoji to a concise text message. They do feel rather playful and sophomoric though - their inclusion would certainly not be appropriate in a business email, and it is unlikely that emojis will feature prominently in the next booker prize winning novel. Maybe this is the reason that there were complains when they were used to depict the GCSE grades at the John Fisher School. There are many academics who take the whole business of emoji`s very seriously though. Vyvyan Evans, former professor of linguistics at Bangor university, says their use is considerably altering the way in which we communicate. His latest book `The Emojo Code` opposes the view that their usage leads to lazy communication. `The naysayers, the doom-mongers, the self-appointed grammar police in the popular press and so on argue without any evidence that things like emoji are basically the equivalent of an adolescent grunt,` Professor Evans has said. His theories seem to imply that that human communication actually has more to do with posture and tone of voice - the pitch itself - rather than the purely linguistic content. Emojis are just another way that human embodiment is creeping into technological use. A trivial example of this is how the telephone replaced the letter (or telegram) as the primary method of long distance communication. We can learn more information about someone - how they are feeling, their attitudes and state of mind - through a brief telephone conversation, where we hear not just their words, but (critically) their tone of voice too, than we can from a lengthy letter or email. Whether smiling or frowning faces are a good way to convey how a student has performed in an exam is another matter of course. In my opinion a simple percentage is the best option, not just for clarity, but because it offers a such a high resolution of grading. A student who just scrapes a C grade will have performed considerably worse than a pupil who barely misses a B grade - though this detail will be masked by the final mark they both receive. At university of course things are even worse: a student who just manages to attain a 2:1 could be many marks behind another student who just misses out on a first. Displaying pupil`s results in order of their grade could help to motivate them - and it should be pointed out that the John Fisher School was displaying the pupils` progress in emoji`s - these weren`t final, or even predicted marks. Homeschooling from an Insider's Perspective We are all familiar with the stereotypical homeschooler: a student who goes to the park for P.E. and probably goes to school in pajamas, a privilege he is usually envied for. Over the past few years, this stereotype has become increasingly irrelevant as more and more families, especially in California, have decided to pull their children out of the public school system in order to ensure that they get the best education possible. Being a homeschooled student myself, I have come to see the many benefits of homeschooling and treasure the years I spent studying at home.The first thing that comes to mind is the personalized attention my brother and I always had. We attended “class” every weekday by logging into the A Beka Academy streaming website and watching pre-recorded lectures in an actual classroom. This allowed us to pause the video or go back if we were struggling with a particular concept. Added to that was the fact that our parents, science students themselves, were also av ailable to reinforce the material.Homeschooling also gave us the chance to study without the constant distractions of an average public or private school education. There was no need to have a “social life” or to maintain innumerable connections all at the same time. In a way, homeschooling made it easier to set academic goals, even long-term goals, and stick to them at the simple, everyday level. For me personally, this meant that my faith in Christ and relationship with Him had to be the guiding force of my education. From the very outset of high school, I decided that if it were the Lord’s will, I wanted to become a medical missionary. To do that, I would have to study very hard to get into a good college and later, a good medical school. Looking back, I realize that the loving support of my family and teachers helped me to take solid steps in that direction.Another important aspect of homeschooling that many families treasure is the opportunity to grow close by learning an d working together, and my family was no exception. True, my brother and I missed our friends from the private school we used to attend, but over time, we found other friends in our parents and in each other. Soon enough, the laughs, the discussions, and even the long, quiet study hours created a bond among us that we treasure to this day.Homeschooling has come a long way since its earliest stages of Puritan practice, and yet the stereotypes connected with it remain. Is it only meant for the lazy or bullied? Is it really substandard? In my experience and in that of many others, homeschooling has been anything but the stereotypical program many think it to be. All of these factors should be co nsidered when choosing a material for an experiment.Experiments can be conducted to investigate all sorts of properties of a substance. For example, one could measure how the solvent affects the temperature of the sample. The amount of heat produced when using solvents will depend on the solvent's melting point, as well as its boiling point.Other experiments are based on mole ratios. Mole ratio are just like ratio measurements and are used to determine the amount of a particular substance in relation to the amount of a different substance. Why SAT Scores Might Be Decreasing The average SAT scores for the high school class of 2011 fell across the nation, according to the College Board (the creator of the SAT) and an article in the New York Times. The average, national reading score fell to a record low of 497, a three-point decrease from 2010. The average writing score dropped two points to 489, and the average math score fell one point to 514. The College Board believes that a more diverse group of students caused this decrease, mainly students whose first language is not English. Nearly 27 percent of the roughly 1.65 million students who took the test came from a home where English is not the only/primary language, which is an increase from 19 percent 10 years ago. However, others believe that changes in the test caused the decline. Robert Schaeffer, public education director of FairTest, a nonprofit group that is critical of standardized testing, said he believes the decreases were caused by the nations high emphasis on high-stakes testing programs. These high-stakes programs can add more pressure to the SAT, which could either improve or decrease students scores. Also, younger students are taking the SAT, hoping to get a head start on the college process. Traditionally, high school juniors and sophomores do not perform as well on standardized tests as high school seniors. [RELATED: What Does SAT Stand For?] Students with only three years of high school English scored an average of 464 on the reading section, compared to an average score of 556 for students who took Advanced Placement or honors English. Schaeffer also believes that the No Child Left Behind act and other federal education laws have made the tests more difficult. How many wake-up calls do policy makers need before they admit that their test-and-punish strategy is a failure? Schaeffer asked. Policymakers need to embrace very different policies if they are committed to real education reform. The SAT has three sections (math, reading and writing), which are scored from 200-800. The highest possible combined score is 2,400. The combined, average score was 1,500 in 2011, compared to 1,506 in 2010. The writing section was introduced in 2005, and students writing scores have been declining every year since then. However, math and reading scores have remained fairly steady over the past 10 years. Math scores have remained between 520 and 514. Reading scores have averaged between 508 and 499. Despite the average SAT scoredecline, the number of high scores is actually increasing. On the math section, the number of students who scored at least 700 out of a possible 800 has increased more than 20 percent since 2007. The SAT and other standardized tests like the ACT are designed to indicate how well a student will perform during his or her freshman year of college. However, there has been much debate about how accurate that actually is. Many educators have long believed that a students high school grades are a better indicator of college grades than standardized tests. However, the College Board recently tried to create a tangible scale to predict future grades. For the first time, it estimated that the combined score of 1,550 means that students will have a 65 percent chance of averaging at least a B-minus in college. Toni: California State Polytechnic University, Pomonas campus is beautiful! Located in Los Angeles County, its hard to wrap your mind around such a hidden gem. The campus is suburban with ample opportunity to get to Orange County or downtown LA quickly. The security on campus is great. There wasnt a moment I was too afraid to walk to classes. The university does offer security escorts for students and staff who would like to be accompanied during the day and at night. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Toni:What comes to mind is a professor who once said, The professors and staff will always be there for the students; the students need to utilize the staff because we do not beg you to come to our office hours. With this being said, the teaching staff and supporting staff are available either with open door policies or scheduling appointments to meet. Utilize the staff! How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Toni:When I was a freshman, I lived on the honors floor, which was amazing because it was quiet enough for me to study. The commons are incredibly close to the dorms and have great food options. The resident advisers are constantly preparing and putting on events for the students who live in the dorms. The suites are the other on-campus living option. They are farther from the commons, but the meal plan options encourage dining in that part of campus through the combination of meal plans and meal points. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Toni:The university is known for its design and engineering programs. I went to the university for hospitality management because the Collins College of Hospitality Management is well respected. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona prides itself on learning by doing, so all majors have a hands-on aspect intertwined into their classes. For example, instead of doing book work on how customer service should be done, we had to go to a hospitality establishment a minimum of three times and rate the service, leadership, and cleanliness based on a rubric we were presented. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Toni:Personally, I thought meeting people was going to be extremely hard because, at the time, I was extremely shy. However, the universitys activity services do a phenomenal job with icebreakers, putting on a variety of events, and encouraging student involvement. I made a core group of friends I still interact with daily. Greek life and non-Greek life is balanced. The Greeks dont shame non-Greeks for not being a part of their world. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Toni:Honestly, I never used the main Career Center because Collins College of Hospitality Management had a fabulous career coordinator who was constantly working with organizations, and even individuals, for career placement. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona has a large career fair for the main university, and then each college has their own fair where the participants are more specialized to the college. For instance, my college has a larger amount (and variety) of fine dining, 4- to 5-star hotel properties, and aviation recruitment than the main career fair offers. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Toni:The library is large enough that during midterm and final exam season there are seats for everyone. There are multiple student unions, all of which offer free printing, ample seating, and community. The best part is you dont have to belong to a center group to use the facilities. Everyone is welcomed in each union! Describe the surrounding town. Toni:If youre looking for a traditional college town, thats not Pomona. The area is mostly industrial. Downtown Pomona is artsy with a great food scene and a couple of galleries. There is also a venue in downtown Pomona that some great acts have come through. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Toni:Its an average size. If youre looking to get lost in the crowd, this isnt it. The largest class is about 150 students (an introductory course), and the class sizes range from 30 students to 10 depending on the course. I loved the structure and size because I was able to develop relationships with people who were in every single class. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Toni:My most memorable moment was when I had a family member pass away right before finals, and my professors pushed my final exams back by a week to allow me to attend the funeral without worrying about missing class.
